I was born a twin, along with my 3-minute-younger brother, Brady. My parents, George and Sharon, named me Andrew Mark Dorman. I weighed something around 3 lbs. 8 ounces. I stayed in the hospital for about a month or so. Coming home for the first time was very exciting. My Grandpa "Jack" Dorman even came from South Dakota for the joyous event. However, Brady stayed in the hospital for about 1 year. He was born with only half an esophoguos. He had a lot of surgeries. Later in Life When I was 4 years old, I started Tot-Lot, a summer program for little kids. We made crafts and played games. One of my clearest memories is when it rained the day we made crafts with a lot of glue. Rain and water don't mix. The car I rode home in was a mess! When summer was over, so was Tot-Lot. It was time to go to Pre-School. I attended St. Paul's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. It was fun. There was a game room with play horses, and tug-tug boats in a plastic pool. The thing I remember most is one day, Brady was sick. I didn't want to go alone! I cried the whole day. It was actually an advantage. I got to make a castle out of toy bricks and books all day. The teacher, Mr. Holstrom, didn't make me participate in class activities that day. Boy, was that day great! Except, kids kept knocking over my castle! Big Boy -- (school information from my School Years book) I was 5 years old. It was late summer/early fall 1992. It was time for me to start...KINDERGARTEN! I attended Arthur Elementary from K-5. In Kindergarten my teacher was Mrs. Rankin. I met a lot of new friends. The one that I;ve kept the longest is Lance Allison. He is still my friend today. Lance, Steven Wickencamp, and I used to make "stamps". We'd cut out squares with squiggley scissors and draw pictures on them. Steven moved away in the middle of the year to a different school but, Lance stayed and we played various made up games at recess, and started the annual making of the water works. That's where during the winter we move slush, snow, and ice and make a water way for melted snow. In 1st Grade Lance and I were seperated in different classrooms. I had Mrs. Bean. I was 6 then and, I have no real clear memories. I faintly remember when we had a pizza party. I thought we could have 3 peices, but we could only have 2. I got in trouble and was angry the rest of the day. Mrs. Wickencamp's (Yes, Steven from Kindergarten is her son) classroom was where Lance and I were stationed during the 94-95 school year in 2nd grade. This was the year that my extended learning began, also the first year that I took the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS). From scoring highly on the ITBS, I was elegible for Prime Time, a program for talented students. Water Works was my first class. (Lance was in it, too) We learned about water recycling, evporation and the water cycle, made water clocks, and visited the Cedar Rapids water distilation plant. One of my clocks I made was called the Lance. Short time measurements were called Garets (Garet is his middle name) and n garets made up an Allison, a longer measurement of time. It was all very fascinating. Third Grade, Miss Moucka's classroom, Age 8. This was the beggining of LAM Inc. Lance and I became friends with Matt Herbst. We had many common iterests. Lance and I were in Prime Time again, and this was Matt's first year. We made a club called LAM (Lance, Andy, Matt). We made up games like LAM Body, a game where we play roles of body parts and help the body we were in (the US map painted on the black top). One thing I really remember is, during an indoor recess (it was raining) we saw that there was a kite stuck in the tree just outside the window. Sure enough, when the teacher wasn't in the room, that kite was pulled in! Well, a lot of people got in trouble but, it was still pretty funny. Miss. Walters was my teacher in fourth grade. Once again, I was split up from my friends. I met Lee Adams, who moved away at the end of the year. I was in PACT that year. PACT is like Prime Time for older kids. I don't remember much from 4th Grade. I do know that I once got all my words right on a maintnence test and I got a special prize. In 5th Grade, I had my second Moucka. Mrs Moucka is my 3rd Grade teacher's sister-in-law. 5th Grade was fun. I was in PACT. I was in the same class as Lance. I was Uncle Joe in the winter play. This was the year that sparked my love for computers. When my class had its turn in turn in the comptuer lab, I saw Lance type in to the Apple //e, "PRINT "HELLO". He pressed enter. The screen displayed what he'd put with in the parenthesis. 'HELLO' it said. I asked him how he did it. He said it was a computer programming language called BASIC. His brother's friend showed him how to do it on a TRS-80 Lance had purchased. He told me the two commands he knew, PRINT and INPUT. This rang a bell in my mind. PRINT? INPUT? This was the language that I'd learned from my brother, Michael a few years previously when he got a $40 compilar for Christmas. I learned mroe and more on the language and pretty soon was programming like a pro. We decided to teach a BASIC class. Matt, Lance, and I taught 7 students after school on 5 occasions. It was a great success! 5th Grade was a great grade. On the last day of school, the whole 5th grade got to go to Chapman's World, a water park. The school PTA donated money so we could have a memorable end of elementary school. Middle School Starting in 6th Grade, I attend Franklin Middle School. In 6th Grade I was on teh Hurricane team. I had two teachers: Mrs. Young for LA, PD, and SS, and Mrs. Hopper (hoop - er) for Math, and Science. It was a fun team, and I learned a lot. We went on nearly 15 field trips. One time we went to Prairie City, Iowa. 2 1/2 hours away! We had to come to school and hour early at 7:00am, and didn't get back to school untill 5:00pm, 2 1/2 hours after school normally got out! This was also the year I began band. I played teh baritone at first but switched to my prefered instrument, the trumpet at the beginning of the 2nd trimester. That year I was in PACT again, with the coordinater, Mr. Lueck (lee - k). My proudest PACT acheivement was National History Day. It's a program where you study about a cetain topic/person/innovation of your choice fitting the theame. The theame this year was Technology. I did a display board on Thomas Alva Edison. I didn't get to the state competition, but at the regionals, my project scored as "Superior", the highest rank possible. I also won third place in the Creative Writing Essay Contest. Another thing I am proud of is, in the last 2 trimesters, I had straigh A's. In 7th Grade, my homeroom teacher was Mrs. Shoemaker. She teacher Learning Disabled students so, I'm barely ever in her class. My subject teachers are: Ms. Young (Yes, 2 Young's too!) for LA, PD, and SS (the same subjects as well!), Mr. Michel's for Math, and Mrs. Willson for Science. I was in PACT, once again. The biggest project I've taken part in was by far Mock Trial. We spent 100+ hours working on it. Mock Trial is where you get a case, and affidavits, choose roles, and prepare a case. I was in Franklin Team "N". At the City wide competition, my team won 1st place, and Franklin took home 1st and 3rd place trophies. Since, I'm still in 7th Grade, I haven't got much to say. One of my goals is to keep my G.P.A. at 4.0 which it is at this point. for more information on what i like to do, go to my hobbies page.
